Polypropylene, steel or aluminium cutter deck?

It’s important when choosing a rotary lawnmower to select the right cutter deck. The deck sits below the engine so must take the weight of and offer protection to the engine. You have a choice of three cutter decks; steel, aluminium and polypropylene all with their own advantages and disadvantages.

The traditional steel cutter deck is strong and tends to be cheaper than aluminium. However, they are the heaviest of all decks and will start to rust after time.

Aluminium decks are non-corrosive and although costlier you can get more for money. These decks are tough yet lighter than steel decks and tend to maintain there appearance for longer.

The final option seems to attract rather negative views even though it offers the most advantages. Polypropylene cutter decks aren’t just non-corrosive and long lasting but are lighter than steel and aluminium decks allowing for easier manoeuvrability. Unfortunately, the cheaper petrol mowers tend not to be fitted with polypropylene decks, but they are widely available on electric mowers.
